How To Choose the Right Bed Height For Your Mattress

When going to a mattress sale in San Diego, many people are excited to have a bed that will finally satisfy their level of comfort. While the mattress itself plays a large role in sleep quality, many people forget that there are other factors that they must consider when buying a bed. One of the most notable features is bed height. Bed frames come in many shapes and sizes and can accommodate sleepers in a variety of ways.

Much like the softness or fitness of a mattress, the ideal height of a bed is typically linked to personal preference. Some people may be accustomed to having their bed close to the ground and it may feel unnatural to have a more perched frame. Meanwhile, others may like the lifted bed frame and feel uncomfortable with their mattress close to their floor.

When you’re shopping for new mattresses, you should keep in mind that the height of your bed should be proportionate to your physical height. This ensures that getting in and out of your bed does not require an inordinate amount of strain on your body. If you have to constantly boost yourself into bed, then you run the risk of hurting yourself when you’re trying to get in a relaxed state of mind. For older individuals, this is especially true. Beds that are low or too high can exacerbate joint pain. Sleep experts recommend a bed frame height that matches the level of the person’s knee. Average bed height is commonly around 2 feet from the ground.

Just as you must buy a new mattress every so often, you must also reevaluate the height of your bed. You may have a two-feet high bed frame for many years but this may not be the optimal height as you get older. Before visiting a mattress sale, make sure to consider your bed frame closely and ensure that you are sleeping on the right surface. If you have joint muscle pain or other physical ailments, then you may want to consult a doctor about your bed frame. Here are some of the most popular bed frame styles on the market right now:

  • Platform bed – These bed frames are very popular because of their clean, modern look. However, they are only around 18 inches from the ground, which does not leave a lot of room for storage. These beds may be good for shorter, younger people and may not be the best option for taller or elderly folks.
  • Traditional Bed – Standard bed frames are engineered to be around 25 inches off the ground and require a box spring for the mattress. These are great for rooms with taller ceilings and people who want something a little higher than a platform bed.
  • Antique Bed – If you’ve ever seen antique bed frames, then you may have noticed that they are considerably taller than most bed frames. These can be close to 36 inches from the ground, which provides a more stylized look for bedrooms. It also allows room for storage under the bed. However, these may not be the best option for people that are on the petite side.
  • Adjustable Bed – If you’re having trouble deciding on the perfect bed height, then you may consider investing in an adjustable bed! These typically offer 12 to 18 inches of height from the ground. With an adjustable base, the sleeper can change their bed height based on their own needs and preferences. These can be great frames for a guest room, where you may need to accommodate a different range of sleepers.
